Law, order committee meeting held : Administration assures of crackdown on illegal vehicles on highways

Rajbari Correspondent

The monthly law and order committee meeting was held at  Goalando Upazila Parishad auditorium in Rajbari on Sunday  presided over by UNO Md. Nahidur Rahman.

The meeting raised allegations of sand-laden drum trucks, three-wheelers and other vehicles plying at reckless speeds on the Dhaka-Khulna highway, and vehicles carrying overweight goods being released from the weigh scale installed by BIWTC in front of the Upazila Parishad in collusion with brokers for extra money. The Upazila administration has decided to conduct regular drives to stop these irregularities.

In the law and order committee meeting held at around 11 am on Sunday (June 29), Goalando Ghat Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Rakibul Islam, Upazila Health and Planning Officer Dr. Md. Maruf Hasan, Goalanda Journalists Forum Convener Helal Mahmud, Joint Convener Mainul Haque, Goalando Press Club General Secretary Shahidul Islam, among others, spoke.

It was informed in the meeting that the speed of three-wheeled vehicles has increased from the Goalando intersection on the Dhaka-Khulna highway to Daulatdia Ghat. Accidents are almost always caused by the speed of sand-carrying drum trucks. Practically, no action is taken in these matters. Heavy goods vehicles heading to Dhaka to cross the river are leaving their vehicles at the BIWTC weight scale in front of the Goalanda Upazila Parishad through some brokers. Accidents are almost always caused by reckless speeding of underage drivers. Sand is being illegally cut from the ferry ghat and driven on the highway at reckless speed in drum trucks. Since no action is being taken to stop it, it is becoming more reckless. Goalanda Ghat Police Station OC Rakibul Islam urged all the law and order committee members to play a strong role in stopping these irregularities. Goalando Ghat Police Station promised to be stricter with the cooperation of the upazila administration.

UNO Nahidur Rahman said, "From now on, intensive operations will be conducted on the highway every day. Minors will not be allowed to drive any vehicle." The officer assured that necessary measures will be taken by conducting mobile courts.
