MP Naser Rahman alleges massive corruption in health sector, Tk 1.2 cr  embezzled at Moulvibazar 250-Bed Hospital

Moulvibazar Correspondent

Member of Parliament for Moulvibazar-3, Member of the BNP National Executive Committee, and Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Land M. Naser Rahman has alleged widespread corruption and plunder in the health sector, stating that public funds are failing to reach ordinary citizens.

Speaking as the chief guest at the inauguration of a physiotherapy center in Kulaura Upazila on Monday  M. Naser Rahman described corruption in the health sector as the "mother of all corruption." He asserted that massive looting occurred under the previous fascist regime and has persisted through the interim government, leaving state health services severely degraded.

Disclosing irregularities at the 250-Bed District Hospital in Moulvibazar, the lawmaker alleged that Tk 1.2 crore was withdrawn without floating any tender. He claimed that the hospital's Superintendent and Residential Medical Officer (RMO) jointly embezzled the funds.

"Last week, I caught a daylight theft red-handed at the Moulvibazar 250-Bed Hospital involving Tk 1.2 crore," M. Naser Rahman stated. "The Superintendent and the RMO withdrew Tk 1.2 crore without any tender. Three inquiry committees have been formed to investigate the matter, and the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has initiated an investigation."

Illustrating the systemic drain of public funds, M. Naser Rahman remarked that out of a hypothetical national health budget allocation of Tk 60,000 crore, thousands of crores are lost to theft, kickbacks, and agent commissions, leaving only Tk 20,000 crore to Tk 25,000 crore for actual public welfare. He emphasized that financial allocations alone cannot reform healthcare without strict oversight, administrative accountability, and structural management.

Hosted by Colonel (Retd.) Liyakat Ali Khan, Head of CSR at East Coast Group, the inauguration event featured welcome remarks by Azam J. Chowdhury, Chairman of East Coast Group. Dr. Md. Zakir Hossain, Acting Civil Surgeon of Moulvibazar, attended as a special guest.

East Coast Group Director Dilruba Chowdhury, Managing Director Tanveer A. Chowdhury, District BNP Convening Committee Member M.A. Mukit, Md. Fakhrul Islam, local leaders of Kulaura Upazila BNP, journalists, and local dignitaries were also present at the event.
