 The government has taken initiatives to end the long-standing watercraft and ferry crisis. The Ministry of Shipping has announced plans to launch a new ferry before Eid-ul-Azha to make travel easier and safer for people in Dwip Upazila.

State Minister for Shipping Rajib Ahsan gave this information during a site visit to Hatiyar Nalchira Chowghat area on Saturday (April 4) morning. He said the government is taking prompt steps considering the real situation to reduce the suffering of the people of the island region.

The State Minister further said, "Ensuring safe and comfortable travel for people in coastal areas including Hatia is our priority. For that purpose, we are taking necessary measures by coming to the spot and identifying the problems."

He said that there are plans to further widen the ferry piers on both sides of the Hatiyar. In addition, regular dredging activities are being intensified to maintain the navigability of the river. Work is being taken forward in coordination with the Water Development Board to develop the pier ramps and preserve the riverbanks to make ferry traffic safer and more sustainable.

He also said that as part of the government's long-term plan, various development initiatives will be taken to modernize and make the Hatya maritime communication system effective.

BIWTA Chairman Rear Admiral Arif Ahmed Mustafa, Secretary of the Ministry of Shipping Dr. Nurunnahar Chowdhury and other concerned officials were present during the inspection.

Locals hope that if these initiatives are implemented quickly, communication with the mainland will be easier, safer, and more time-saving.
