Zubaer, Pirojpur

Local lawyers and administrative officials in Pirojpur have stressed that eradicating narcotics from society is impossible under the existing legal framework and called for immediate legislative amendments to increase punishments for drug consumption and trafficking.

They made the assertions during an exchange meeting organized by 'Madak Pratirodhe Samajik Udyog' (Social Initiative Against Drugs) at the District Bar Association auditorium on Wednesday noon, aimed at amplifying public awareness and fostering a drug-free society.

The meeting was presided over by Pirojpur District Bar Association President Advocate Shah Alam and moderated by its General Secretary M K M Awal.

Executive Magistrate Athahar Shakil attended the event as the chief guest, while senior journalist Moniruzzaman Nasim Ali, the convener of the social initiative and president of the District Corruption Prevention Committee (Duprok), and Bapon Sen, an inspector of the Department of Narcotics Control, were present as special guests. Senior lawyers, including Adv Humayun Kabir Badal, Special Public Prosecutor for the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Adv Rahima Akter Hasi, Advocate Dilip Kumar Majhi, and Advocate Imam Hossain Jamaddar, also addressed the gathering.

During the discussion, the speakers pointed out that alongside tightening legal loopholes and raising penalties, enforcement authorities must ensure that innocent citizens are not falsely implicated or arrested due to malicious local conspiracies. The legal community collectively declared its full solidarity with the ongoing anti-drug social movement in Pirojpur, describing substance abuse as a severe threat to the future of the younger generation.

The session concluded with a joint pledge by the attendees to implement an integrated action plan to transform Pirojpur into a completely drug-free district.
