Prime Minister Tarique Rahman inaugurated the Tk 1,542-crore Kahua Flood Control, Drainage, and Irrigation Project in Feni on Thursday afternoon.
The Prime Minister unveiled the foundation plaque for the Muhuri Rehabilitation (1st Phase) Project near the outskirts of Parshuram Upazila and the Khowaighat Muhuri Bridge area. Following the unveiling, he exchanged greetings with local residents and participated in a tree-plantation program at the venue.
Approved on June 16 by the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) at an estimated cost of Tk 1,542.16 crore, the project encompasses the rehabilitation of 67.92 km of embankments, 11.73 km of riverbank protection, re-excavation of 83.50 km of rivers and reservoirs, reconstruction of 27 irrigation structures, and the installation of 77 inlets. Subsequent phases outline plans for constructing new dams along the Muhuri, Kahua, and Silonia rivers, alongside dredging works scheduled for completion by 2030.
The ceremony was attended by Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change Abdul Awal Mintoo MP, Water Resources Minister Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Anee, State Minister for Water Resources Farhad Hossain Azad, Rafiqul Alam Majnu MP (Feni-1), Zainal Abedin MP (Feni-2), and Rehana Akhter Ranu MP.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman departed his Gulshan residence in Dhaka by road at 8:40 AM and arrived in Feni around 1:15 PM.
Following the Parshuram event, the Prime Minister proceeded to Fulgazi to plant trees at Begum Khaleda Zia Women's College and visit the Fulgazi District Council Dak Bungalow, where he inaugurated the grid integration of rooftop solar power systems. A total of 962.5 kW of solar capacity has been installed across government facilities in Chhagalnaiya (415 kW), Parshuram (298 kW), and Fulgazi (249 kW).
Later in the afternoon at Fulgazi Government Pilot High School grounds, the Prime Minister distributed Family Cards to 510 recipients in Fulgazi and Farmer Cards to 7,643 farmers across the district. He also presented honorariums to 238 local religious leaders, including imams, muezzins, khadims, and priests, before addressing a public rally prior to his return to Dhaka.
Fulgazi holds deep historic connections for the Prime Minister's family; Sreepur village in Fulgazi is the ancestral home of former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia's father, Iskandar Majumder. Begum Khaleda Zia represented the Feni-1 constituency—comprising Fulgazi, Parshuram, and Chhagalnaiya—five times as a Member of Parliament since 1991.
