Teesta River water rising abnormally in Lalmonirhat, 44 sluice gates opened

Sabbir Hossain, Hatibandha (Lalmonirhat )

Due to heavy rain and flooding from upstream areas, the water level of the Teesta River has started rising in Lalmonirhat’s Hatibandha area on  On Friday.

The water level at the Tista Barrage was recorded at 51.95 meters—20 cm below the danger level.

Despite this, people living near the river are worried about possible floods and river erosion. They say that floodwater from India's hilly regions and continuous rain have increased the river’s flow. Low-lying farmland is already underwater, damaging rice seedbeds.

Local officials said the water level is still under control, but to manage it, 44 sluice gates of the dam have been opened. Monitoring continues.

Experts warn that if the heavy rain and floodwaters keep coming, the situation could get worse. Authorities and locals are advised to stay alert and prepared.
