In connection with the vandalism and arson attack on the Kawkhali Upazila BNP office in Pirojpur, a court has denied bail and ordered the imprisonment of Advocate A.K.M. Abdus Shahid, President of the Upazila Awami League, along with two other party leaders.
The order was passed on Wednesday noon by the Judge of the District and Sessions Court.
According to court sources, the three accused had previously been granted interim bail for eight weeks by the High Court. Upon the expiry of that bail period, they surrendered to the District and Sessions Court on Wednesday and sought fresh bail. After the hearing, the court rejected their bail plea and ordered them to be sent to jail.
The leaders sent to prison include Advocate A.K.M. Abdus Shahid, President of Kawkhali Upazila Awami League; Mahmud Khan Khokon, Vice President; and Md. Nasir Uddin Talukder, General Secretary of Upazila Jubo League.
It may be noted that on 4 August last year, activists of the Awami League and its affiliated organizations allegedly vandalized and set fire to the Kawkhali Upazila BNP office in the afternoon.
Following the incident, on the night of 13 October, Sohel Mahmud, Vice President of the Upazila Swechchhasebak Dal, filed a case at Kawkhali Police Station. The case named 41 individuals, including former Upazila Parishad Chairman Abu Sayeed Monu and Upazila Awami League President Adv A.K.M. Abdus Shahid, and also included 50 unidentified accused — bringing the total to 91.
