The prosecution on Monday (June 30) submitted formal charges against 30 people in connection with the death of Begum Rokeya University student Abu Sayeed during the mass uprising in July last year.

The charges were filed before the International Crimes Tribunal-2, led by Justice Md Nazrul Islam Chowdhury.

The tribunal is scheduled to hold a hearing at 11:30am to decide whether to take the charges into cognizance.

Earlier, the investigation agency found that these 30 individuals were directly or indirectly involved in the killing. Following the probe, the tribunal had directed the investigators to submit the report by June 15 and fixed June 26 for the hearing.

According to the prosecution, Abu Sayeed was shot dead by police during an anti-discrimination student movement. Former Sub-Inspector Amir Hossain and Constable Sujon Chandra Roy were directly involved in the shooting, the charge sheet said.

It also alleged that university proctor Shariful Islam and Chhatra League activist Imran Chowdhury Akash, among others, aided and incited the incident. These four accused were already in custody in connection with separate cases.

Abu Sayeed was killed in Rangpur on July 16, 2024, amid demonstrations demanding reform of the quota system.
