Coast Guard rescues critical patient from passenger launch after helpline call

Staff Correspondent

The Bangladesh Coast Guard tonight provided emergency medical assistance to a critically ill woman aboard a passenger launch after receiving a distress call on its emergency helpline, 16111.

Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujon, media officer of the Coast Guard said this on Wednesday night in a press release.

The press release said, a man, accompanied by his ailing wife, had boarded the Dhaka-bound passenger launch "MV Sonar Tori-1" from Chandpur at around 5:30 PM on Wednesday to seek advanced medical treatment in the capital. However, around 6:00 PM, when the vessel reached the waters near Munshiganj, the woman's condition deteriorated rapidly due to acute respiratory distress, leaving her in a critical state. Facing an immediate crisis, her husband dialed the Coast Guard emergency service number 16111 seeking urgent intervention.

Upon receiving the information, a specialized medical team from Coast Guard Station Pagla rushed to the mid-river location equipped with an oxygen cylinder and essential medical supplies. The team successfully boarded the launch, administered emergency medical care, and stabilized the patient.

To ensure she reached a hospital without any delay, the Coast Guard evacuated the woman using their specialized boat, brought her to Sadarghat in the capital, and subsequently sent her to the nearby Millennium Specialized Hospital for intensive treatment.
