
Accused of threat to journalists at Munshiganj Press Club over assault report on woman arrested

Maruf Molla, accused of issuing threats to journalists at Munshiganj Press Club over news coverage of a "woman harassment" incident, has been detained by the Army.
He was apprehended on Saturday evening from the Super Market area of the town. Munshiganj Sadar Police Station OC Md. Saiful Alam confirmed the arrest.
The detained individual, Maruf Molla (24), is the son of Omar Faruk Mintu from Nayakandi area under the municipality. At the time of the threat, he was accompanied by 4-5 other young men.
Shihab Ahmed, the Munshiganj correspondent of Daily Bangla, said that on the night of Friday, May 10, Maruf Molla arrived with 3-4 motorcycles and issued threats to him and other present journalists in retaliation for reporting the recent controversial incident at the Munshiganj launch terminal. Maruf also attempted to instruct journalists on how to report the news. The entire incident was secretly recorded on video.
At the time, present at the Munshiganj Press Club were: General Secretary Sujon Haidar Jony, former presidents Shahid-e-Hasan Tuhin, Russel Mahmud, and Kazi Sabbir Ahmed Dipu; district correspondents Saifur Rahman Titu (Ekattor TV), Jewel Rana (Nagarik TV), Faisal Hossain (Prothom Alo), Arafat Raihan Sakib (Jamuna TV), Shuvo Ghosh (Channel 24), and Rubel Hossain (Bangla TV).
Context: On the night of Friday several female passengers were dragged out of a cabin on the Dhaka-Lalmohan route launch MV Captain at the Munshiganj terminal and beaten in public. On Saturday afternoon, the police arrested Nehal Ahmed Jihad (24), who was identified in viral videos of the incident.
