Abdul Awal, Narsingdi
Shilmandi Union, a remote union in Narsingdi Sadar Upazila, continues to shine in its unique contributions to education, culture, religious events, sports, development, child marriage prevention, and government service programs.
Acting Chairman of this union Mosa: Selina Begum is relentlessly working to advance the union’s development efforts.
Established in 1961, Shilmandi Union is one of the prominent union parishads in Narsingdi Sadar Upazila. It is home to the renowned Shekherchar Bazar and Babur Hat Bazar, often referred to as the "Manchester of the East." The union is famous for producing the majority of bananas grown in Narsingdi district. Many major textile industries in the country are located within its boundaries. The union also cultivates a variety of vegetables, meeting local demands and exporting surplus to other districts. Shilmandi has produced numerous successful individuals who earn significant incomes through jobs in Bangladesh and abroad. Many freedom fighters from this union participated in the Liberation War.
Since assuming the role of Acting Chairman, Mosa: Selina Begum has been instrumental in advancing education, culture, flood control, drainage systems, paving raw roads, repairing brick soling, and expanding digital services. Her unprecedented development efforts have earned widespread praise. Every village in the union now has electricity. Once, residents had to navigate muddy roads or brick paths to travel within the union, but now, thanks to extensive development by the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED), most roads are paved, transforming rural connectivity for Shilmandi and nearby unions.
The union parishad provides digital services such as birth registration, land record retrieval, birth and death certificates, university admission form filling, financial banking services, various certifications, online voter registration, public exam results, email services, and registration for various allowances. These services, available at the parishad, have reduced the need for residents to visit the upazila or district headquarters, greatly benefiting the community. These efforts are helping Shilmandi gain recognition as a model union.
Acting Chairman Mosa: Selina Begum believes that with everyone’s cooperation, government services can be effectively delivered to the public. She is tirelessly working to transform Shilmandi Union into a modern model union, maintaining her popularity through public welfare initiatives.
Residents note that roads once covered in knee-deep mud during the monsoon have been upgraded with brick soling by the union parishad. Drainage systems and canal excavations have eliminated waterlogging, improving crop yields. Many now consider Shilmandi a model union.
Union Parishad members state that the level of development under the current acting chairman is unprecedented. They are working alongside her to ensure the union’s overall progress.
Mosa: Selina Begum further shared, “Shilmandi Union was once a neglected area in Narsingdi Sadar Upazila. Since taking charge, I have been working to make it a model union. We have constructed roads, culverts, and drains, excavated canals to prevent waterlogging, and provided government benefits like widow and elderly allowances. From my personal funds, I have supported over 50 underprivileged meritorious students with books, school uniforms, shoes, and private tutoring fees. I have also distributed sports equipment to primary and secondary schools and madrasas.”
She added that, with the support of the administration and residents, the union parishad members are working to combat drug abuse, terrorism, and extremism. She seeks everyone’s cooperation to transform Shilmandi Union into a modern and model union.
