Brave and humane teacher Mahrin Chowdhury, who sacrificed her life to save at least 20 students when a Bangladesh Air Force training plane crashed at Milestone School and College in Uttara in the capital, was laid to rest next to her parents' graves.
On Tuesday (July 22), around 3:30pm, the deceased was buried next to her parents' graves in the family graveyard after the funeral prayers at the Bogulagari School and College grounds in Jaldhaka Upazila, Nilphamari, her village home.
A large number of people from different walks of life including Jaldhaka Upazila Executive Officer Zayed Imrul Mozakkin, District Jamaat Executive Committee member and Jamaat-nominated MP candidate from Nilphamari-3 constituency Obaidullah Salafi, Jaldhaka Upazila Ameer Mokhlesur Rahman, District BNP Vice President Alhaj Syed Ali, BNP leader Tahmid Faisal Chowdhury, Shariful Islam Babu, the late husband Mansur Helal and others participated in the funeral prayer. The funeral prayer was led by Imam Maulana Munabbirul Haque of the Pesh Mosque.
The late Mahrin Chowdhury was the coordinator (grades three to five) of the Bengali version of Milestone School and College in Uttara in the capital. On Monday (July 21) she was taken to the Dhaka Medical College Burn Unit in a burnt condition and died there at 7:30 pm while undergoing treatment.
The deceased's husband, Mansur Heller, said his wife could have survived if she had wanted to. Instead, she worked with the army to save her students. She pulled students out of the classroom one by one. At one point, she herself collapsed and died after being burned to death and was taken to the hospital.
