College student sets herself on fire in Tala

Satkhira Correspondent

A college student named Sanjida Akhter Tuli (17) committed suicide by setting herself on fire in Tala, Satkhira. She is the daughter of Md. Kamrul Sardar of Ghona village in Islamkati union of the upazila. She was admitted to Khulna Medical College Hospital in a burnt condition. As her condition was serious, she died on Thursday afternoon on the way to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment. Tuli is a class 11 student of Tala Women's Degree College.

The incident took place on Thursday (May 1) at around 11:30 am in Ghona village in Tala upazila of Satkhira.

Tuli's neighbors said that burnt clothes were lying in the yard of the house, on the road and in the banana plantation next to the yard. The burnt upper part of her body was burnt along with her clothes. Parts of her clothes are scattered in different places and a strong smell of kerosene can be felt from the scene. When the fire started burning on her, even the green leaves of the trees in the area where she ran were burnt.

Locals also said that taking advantage of the fact that no one was home, Tuli sat at the end of the yard in front of her house, soaked her body in kerosene and set herself on fire with the help of a gas light. At that time, her mother was busy cleaning someone else's house and her father had gone to drive a rickshaw in Khulna. When her body was completely on fire, her neighbors came and tried to put out the fire due to her screams. By then, about 80 percent of her body was burnt. With the help of immediate neighbors, she was sent to Khulna Medical College Hospital by ambulance.

Tala Upazila Executive Officer Sheikh Md. Russell, Assistant Superintendent of Police (Tala Circle) Md. Hasanur Rahman, Principal of Tala Mohila College Sheikh Shafiqul Islam, Tala Thana Officer-in-Charge (OC) Sheikh Shahinur Rahman, and Islamkati UP Chairman Professor Golam Faruk visited the scene of the incident.

Locals said that three months ago, an unmarried young man named Aminur Rahman from Kanchanganor village in Dumuria upazila of Khulna used to lead the prayer in the mosque in front of Tuli's house. Tuli proposed marriage to this young man and was rejected. Aminur left the leadership (Imamati) and fled in the incident. However, eyewitnesses said that Aminur's name was written on her hand with a pen before setting herself on fire. They said that many people in the area know about the incident.

Local UP member Ezahar Ali said, I heard that Tuli had proposed marriage to the imam of the mosque next to their house. That is why the imam ran away 15 days ago without informing anyone. He said that Tuli did this because of love.

Islamkati UP Chairman Golam Faruk said, I heard that there was a one-sided love affair with the imam of the local mosque. Although the girl loved him, the boy did not love her. Due to which he ran away. That is probably why the girl poured kerosene on herself and set herself on fire.

Tala Police Station OC  Sheikh Shahinur Rahman said, after receiving the news, I and my senior officer reached the spot. We are yet to know the reason behind the suicide. The matter is under investigation. After the investigation, we will be able to say why the suicide took place. One person has been brought to the police station for questioning in this incident
