May Day and National Occupational Health and Safety Day were observed with due dignity in Joypurhat  at 9:30 AM on Thursday. 

The district administration organized a colourful rally starting from Ramdeo Bajla Government High School. The rally paraded through the main streets of the town and concluded at the Circuit House premises. Leaders and activists from various labor organizations as well as top officials of the local administration participated in the event.

This year’s May Day theme was: “Workers and Employers United, Let’s Rebuild the Nation Anew.” It was reported that various labor organizations in the district also held separate programs on their own initiative.

The rally was led by the Deputy Commissioner and District Magistrate of Joypurhat (Joint Secretary) Afroza Akter Chowdhury. Also present were Additional Superintendent of Police Jinnah Al Mamun, Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Bipul Kumar, and Additional Deputy Commissioner (Revenue) Md. Sabur Ali.

Among political and labour leaders in attendance were A. H. M. Obaidur Rahman Chandan, Assistant Organizing Secretary of BNP, Rajshahi Division,Golzar Hossain, Convenor of Joypurhat District BNP,Masud Rana Pradhan, Senior Joint Convenor,Abu Raihan Uzzal, Secretary of the Municipal BNP,Ummat Ali Himmat, Acting General Secretary, District Motor Workers’ Union,Babul Karim, President, District Sramik Dal,Abdul Matin, General Secretary, District Combined Labor Federation,Jewel Pradhan, General Secretary, District Bhutbhuti-Nosimon-Karimon Workers’ Association and many others.

In the discussion meeting that followed, speakers emphasized the need to ensure fair wages, safe working conditions, and social security for workers.
