Dead dolphin found in Barguna River: A dire warning for environment
Wliullah Emran, Barguna
Yet another dead dolphin has found in the Payra River of Taltali Upazila in Barguna, sounding an alarming environmental signal.
At around 1 PM on Friday (May 2), local fishermen discovered the dolphin’s carcass near the riverbank adjacent to the Shubho Sondha sea beach in Nishanbari Union. It was later recovered with the help of Arifur Rahman, the Taltali coordinator of the environmental organization Dhoritri Rokkhay Amra (DHORA).The recovered dolphin showed deep gashes, a bloodied tail, and clear cut marks on its body. Preliminary assumptions suggest it was killed by a blow from a fishing trawler’s propeller.Environmental activist Arifur Rahman stated, “This is not just the death of a single creature—it signals a serious threat to our marine environment. Such deaths indicate that indiscriminate trawler activity, overfishing, and pollution are pushing our biodiversity toward collapse.”Taltali Range Officer Matiar Rahman confirmed, “We have received reports of the dead dolphin. The Forest Department will investigate and take necessary action.”Dr. Mir Mohammad Ali, a faculty member of the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Science at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, commented, “The death of this dolphin isn’t merely due to a trawler collision—it reflects a serious decline in water and environmental quality. Our river water is deteriorating alarmingly.”
“These deaths are not just accidents—they are outcomes of administrative failure and negligence. Without immediate action to protect the environment, we will not only lose dolphins but also the entire riverine and coastal biodiversity,” he warned.
It is mentioned that in recent months, several dead dolphins have washed ashore in rivers surrounding Taltali. Environmentalists are urging swift public awareness, regulation of trawler movement, pollution control, and strict monitoring of river management.
