Police detained Abu Zafar Surya, former president of a faction of the Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ), along with several others from the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) office at the GPO intersection in Gulistan, Dhaka.

Law enforcement personnel apprehended Abu Zafar Surya at approximately 2:30 PM on Saturday, and escorted him to Paltan Police Station.

Following his detention, Abu Zafar Surya posted a photograph of himself in handcuffs on his personal Facebook account, stating that he and several others were detained while performing professional journalism duties at a JSD representative meeting.

According to police sources, the drive followed an incident earlier on Saturday afternoon, September 26, 2026, when activists associated with the banned Awami League brought out a flash procession in Dhanmondi and exploded crude bombs.

Subsequent security operations in Dhanmondi and Mohammadpur resulted in the initial detention of four individuals. Police reported that several participants from the procession later took shelter inside the JSD office in Gulistan.

Upon receiving information regarding the presence of the suspects, activists from the Juba Dal gathered outside the building, prompting police forces to arrive at the scene.

At approximately 4:00 PM on Saturday, September 26, 2026, police officers escorted several handcuffed individuals out of the JSD office and transported them to Paltan Police Station.

Police officials stated that legal action will be determined following verification of the identities and potential involvement of the detained individuals in the Dhanmondi violence.
