Former Food and Home Minister Major General Mohabbat Jan Chowdhury no more

Former Food and Home Minister, former Major General and former Member of Parliament Mohabbat Jan Chowdhury passed away at Dhaka CMH Hospital on Monday (August 24) at 1 pm. (Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi rajiun)

He was about 100 years old at the time of his death. He is survived by two sons and numerous relatives. His wife died during his lifetime. He is a descendant of the traditional Chowdhury family of Khapura village in Mochna union of Muksudpur upazila of Gopalganj district.

In the 1986 national parliamentary election, he was defeated by Bangladesh Awami League President Sheikh Hasina in the Gopalganj-1 constituency. Later, he was elected as a member of parliament from the Faridpur Sadar constituency.

It is also learnt that he served as an army officer, head of the army's DGFI, chairman of Bangladesh Krishi Bank, and an important director of the financial private institution MIDAS during his career. Family sources said that the body of the deceased will be buried in Dhaka Banani Cemetery.
