Former UP chairman Sujan hanged himself in prison, DMCH declares him dead

 Saidur Rahman Sujan (45), former chairman of Savar's Birulia Union Parishad, who attacked with a firearm during the student uprising, hanged himself in Dhaka Central Jail (Keraniganj). Later, he was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where doctors declared him dead.
 
Sujan hanged himself by tying a towel around his neck in a cell in the Suryajmukhi building of Dhaka Central Jail around 11 am on Sunday (June 15). He was taken to the prison hospital immediately after the incident. He was then taken to DMCH Hospital, where doctors declared him dead at 12:30 pm.
 
Inspector Md. Farooq, in-charge of DMCH Police Camp, confirmed Sujan's death at the hospital.
 
Prison sources said that Sujan was in a common room in Suryajmukhi Bhavan as a prisoner. He attempted suicide with his used towel. He was immediately rescued and first sent to the prison hospital and later to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment. He died there.
 
Inspector General of Prisons (IG Prisons) Brigadier General Syed Md. Motaher Hossain said that prisoner Saidur Rahman Sujon was in a room in Suryajmukhi Bhaban in detention. In the morning, prisoner Sujon also had breakfast. There were three prisoners in that room, one probably went to court, the other was sleeping, Sujon took this opportunity to hang himself by the window with a towel wrapped around his neck. Later, he was taken from the prison hospital to Dhaka Medical College Hospital and died.
 
The IG Prisons said that there are many cases against him, including cases against the student-public movement against discrimination. However, a committee will be formed to investigate how the suicide incident inside the prison occurred.
 
There are a total of 15 cases against Sujon, including one from the International Crimes Tribunal.
 
During the student uprising, Awami League leader and former UP chairman Saidur Rahman Sujan was seen openly firing at protesters. In addition, there were multiple allegations against him even before the July Revolution regarding land grabbing and expansion of dominance in the area.
 
When the Awami League's fascist rule fell on August 5 and Sheikh Hasina fled to India, Sujon also went into hiding. However, in the third week of January, a team of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Intelligence Division raided a flat in Uttara in the capital and arrested him. He has been in prison since then.
 
Saidur Rahman Sujan was arrested in Kakabor area of Birulia Union on September 30, 2020, on charges of extortion during Hasina's regime.
