University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Prof Dr. Mamun Ahmed today stated that the current government and the UGC are giving the highest priority to a skill-based and career-oriented education system.
He emphasized that higher education must be conducted in a way that produces high-quality, innovative, and technologically advanced graduates capable of meeting the shifting demands of both local and international job markets.
He made these remarks while addressing the inaugural session as a special guest at the day-long "International Conference on Textile Science and Engineering 2026," organized for the fourth time by the Bangladesh University of Textiles (BUTEX) at the university auditorium on Saturday.
Education Minister Dr. A N M Ehsanul Haque Milan attended the conference as the chief guest, with BUTEX Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr. Md. Julhash Uddin presiding over the event.
Michael Kokken, Chairman of the Technical Working Group of the Jute and Cocoa Sector under the Ministry of Health of the Netherlands, was present as the conference speaker, while Prof Dr. Bastian Quatgelbaum from Hochschule Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences, Germany, presented the keynote paper. Prof Dr. Md. Ahsan Habib, Dean of the Faculty of Textile Management and Business Studies and President of the conference organizing committee, delivered the welcome address.
Highlighting the true objective of higher education, the UGC Chairman noted that university curriculums should enable students to realize the practical application and social relevance of their acquired knowledge, rather than merely serving as a medium for conferring certificates.
He explained that the UGC aims to establish a comprehensive higher education model that fosters lifelong collaboration among students, educational institutions, industries, and society, ensuring continuous knowledge and skill acquisition throughout their careers.
A total of 48 research papers were presented orally, and 20 papers were showcased in poster format during the conference, which drew a large gathering of local and foreign researchers, academics, textile industry experts, policymakers, and students.
