World Cup analysis : Key reasons for Argentina’s defeat and why they played aggrossively?
By Ahnab Rayan
Complete loss of midfield control :
Spain dominated possession through their midfield core of Rodri, Fabián Ruiz, and Dani Olmo. They starved Argentina of the ball, forcing La Albiceleste to defend for vast stretches and preventing them from building attacks through Lionel Messi or Julián Álvarez.
Total lack of offensive output :
Argentina failed to register a single shot on target across 120 minutes (finishing with just two off-target attempts and eight touches in Spain's penalty box). They went over 105 consecutive minutes without taking a shot as their focus shifted entirely to defensive shape and physical disruption.
Numerical disadvantage in extra time :
Midfielder Enzo Fernández received a second yellow card in the 93rd minute (90+3') for a reckless challenge. Playing with 10 men in extra time stretched Argentina's defense, leaving space that Ferran Torres exploited in the 106th minute to score the winning goal.
Why Argentina played so aggrossively :
Tactical disruption strategy: Facing Spain’s superior passing game, Argentina deliberately relied on a highly physical, combative approach to disrupt Spain's rhythm, provoke mistakes, and unsettle their younger players. They used a similar high-foul tactic in their semi-final win against England.
Neutralizing Spain's Technical Supremacy:
By committing nearly 50 combined fouls during the match, Argentina attempted to turn a fluid football contest into a fractured, stop-start battle where physical duels mattered more than positional play.
High stakes & escalating frustration:
As defending champions desperate to keep their title, Argentina grew visibly frustrated by their inability to create chances or gain control. This spilled over into dangerous challenges during regulation, four yellow cards during play, a red card for Fernández, and post-game brawls that resulted in a red card for Leandro Paredes.
