The crocodile was spotted in the pond of Amjad Majid Mia's house in Charkailash village, Ward No. 6 of Hatia Municipality in the upazila on Wednesday afternoon.
Pond owner Md. Masudul Islam Sharif said, four days ago, on Sunday afternoon, the family members of our village ferrymen first saw the crocodile in the wooden house of Belal. At that time, they tried to kill the crocodile. From there, the crocodile ran away after being chased. On Wednesday afternoon, at around 4:30 pm, my wife Nahida Akhter Panna saw the crocodile floating in the pond behind our house. As soon as such news spread, thousands of people gathered.
Sharif and local resident Shahed Uddin also said that the crocodile was seen floating in the pond until Wednesday evening. But on Thursday morning from 9 am to 10 am, the crocodile was not seen in the pond. The crocodile was not guarded at night. We are not sure whether the crocodile is in the pond or has left. An eager crowd has been gathering here since Thursday morning. However, no one from the administration is here. This has created a sensation in the area. However, locals think that it could be a freshwater crocodile.
Ariful Islam, a BIT officer at Hatia Forest Department, said, "We went to the spot on Wednesday evening after receiving the news. A crocodile-like object was seen in the pond, but we are not completely sure due to poor lighting. The incident has been reported to senior officials of the Forest Department. We will re-verify the matter in the morning."
Hatiya UNO Md. Alauddin said, "I have heard about the matter. Some say it is a crocodile, while others say it resembles a crocodile. The concerned department has been informed to take action."
