DB drags lawyer into custody: Tension at Mymensingh court premises

Tension spread across the Mymensingh court premises following an incident where a lawyer was allegedly manhandled and taken into custody by the Detective Branch (DB) of police
The incident took place at around 3 PM on Wednesday in front of the Mymensingh District Lawyers’ Association building.
According to eyewitnesses and relevant sources, the accused in a 2018 murder case under Gouripur Police Station, who were out on bail, came to the court for their scheduled appearance. After the hearing, lawyer Russel Talukder was accompanying them towards Building No. 1 of the Lawyers' Association. At that time, a group of plainclothes DB officers surrounded them and attempted to detain the two accused.
Lawyer Russel Talukder protested, stating that no one can be detained without an arrest warrant. However, the DB officers ignored his objections and began scuffling with him. Eventually, he was also forcibly taken to the DB office.
The two other individuals taken into custody by the DB were Md. Liyon Sarkar (25) and his younger brother Ripon Sarkar (22), both residents of Hasanpur village in Sidhla Union under Gouripur upazila of Mymensingh.
Footage of the incident has already spread on social media. In the video, a group of plainclothes officers can be seen forcefully dragging the two brothers. When lawyer Russel Talukder intervened, he was also shoved and forcibly taken into a vehicle.
Later, a group of members from the District Lawyers’ Association went to the DB office and secured Russel Talukder’s release through discussion around 4 PM.
District Lawyers’ Association Member Secretary Syed Saduddin Ahmed said, “There was a misunderstanding and altercation with the lawyer during the attempt to arrest an accused. Later, we resolved the issue at the DB office.”
District DB Police Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohidul Islam said, “Liyon is involved in the banned student politics of the Chhatra League. He was arrested on instructions from senior officers. He will be shown arrested in a case. As his brother was present at the scene, he was also taken into custody.”
He further said, “As the lawyer obstructed the arrest, he too was brought to the DB office. Later, understanding the situation, he was released.”
Following the incident of taking a lawyer into custody and the scuffle, tension spread across the court premises. The incident sparked outrage among the lawyers.
