In a shocking incident in Kabirhat upazila of Noakhali, 70-year-old Hosne Ara Begum, mother of an Awami League leader, has succumbed to injuries after being stabbed by miscreants during a violent home invasion. The assailants looted gold ornaments and a large amount of cash during the attack.
She passed away at 7:00 AM on Sunday while under treatment at Popular Hospital in Dhaka. The brutal incident took place earlier on Tuesday, July 1, around 6:30 PM at the ancestral home of Kamal Company (Md. Kamal Khan), in Jagadananda village, Dhanasiri Union’s Ward No. 6, near Matin’s shop.
The victim, Hosne Ara Begum, was the mother of Mohammad Kamal Khan, treasurer of Kabirhat Upazila Awami League and former chairman of Dhanasiri Union Parishad, who has reportedly been in hiding in recent times.
According to local residents, Hosne Ara was alone at home at the time of the attack, while other family members were outside. Around 6:30 PM, assailants entered the house, found her alone, and struck her three times on the head with a sharp weapon. They also ripped off both her ears to snatch gold earrings, looted around four bhori of gold ornaments from her body, and stole approximately Tk 3.5 lakh in cash hidden under the bed.
Her grandson, Salman, discovered her lying unconscious and bloodied in a front room. Upon hearing his screams, neighbors rushed in and took her to Noakhali 250-bed General Hospital, from where she was transferred to Popular Hospital in Dhaka for advanced treatment. Despite medical efforts, she passed away four days later.
Her son, Mainuddin, insisted the incident was not a mere theft but a planned robbery. “This wasn’t just a burglary. It was a targeted and brutal act,” he said.
Confirming the death, Kabirhat Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Shahin Mia stated, “A case has been filed by the victim’s son Mainuddin against unidentified assailants. We are actively investigating the matter. For investigative reasons, we cannot disclose further details at this time.”
He further noted that Hosne Ara regularly wore significant gold jewelry, and the attackers may have stabbed her after recognizing them. “This doesn’t appear to be an ordinary robbery. Multiple perpetrators were involved. We are working to uncover the full motive and identify those responsible,” OC Shahin added.
The tragic incident has cast a shadow of grief over the entire area, with residents demanding swift justice for the heinous crime.
