The Bangladesh Coast Guard has detained  three alleged criminals along with five locally made firearms and 17 rounds of live ammunition during a drive in Chakaria upazila of Cox's Bazar.

Coast Guard Media Officer Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujon said this in a press release  on Tuesday afternoon, and  Executive Officer of BCG Base Cox's Bazar Lieutenant Commander Arafat Hossain also  briefed journalists  regarding the operation.

Acting on secret information that a group was gathering near Badar Aulia Ghat under Chakaria Police Station to supply firearms to pirates targeting commercial vessels at sea, a joint team from Coast Guard Stations Matarbari and Maheshkhali conducted a special drive around 1:00 AM on Tuesday.

During the drive, law enforcers apprehended three individuals and recovered four single-barrel guns, one double-barrel gun, and 17 rounds of live cartridges from their possession.

The arrestees were identified as Akhtar Ahmed, 78, Md. Tanvir, 21, and Rukmuddin, 42, all residents of Cox's Bazar district.

According to Coast Guard officials, the group was involved in illegal arms trade, piracy, attacking tourists, robbery, and intimidating local residents.

Legal proceedings to hand over the arrested individuals and seized arms and ammunition to local police have been taken.
