The Bangladesh Coast Guard has seized a cargo boat carrying a large consignment of smuggled Indian cumin worth approximately Tk 1.57 crore during a drive in the Lohalia River area under Patuakhali Sadar upazila.
Coast Guard Media Officer Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujon said this in a press release on Tuesday morning.
According to Coast Guard sources, a team from Coast Guard Station Patuakhali conducted a special operation around 2:00 AM on October 4 in the Palpara area adjacent to the Lohalia River. Upon searching a suspicious cargo boat anchored in the area, officers recovered 21,000 kilograms of Indian cumin brought into the country evading customs duties.
Sensing the presence of the Coast Guard personnel, the smugglers fled the scene, and no arrests could be made during the drive.
The seized cargo boat and the smuggled cumin were subsequently handed over to Patuakhali Sadar Police Station for further legal proceedings.
The Coast Guard will continue to maintain strict anti-smuggling operations across its jurisdictions to prevent illegal trade and safeguard national revenue, the press release added.
