Dhaka University is set to lead two international research projects worth nearly BDT 100 crore.

 These projects will be funded by the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). Recently, under the Science and Technology Research Partnership for Sustainable Development (SATREPS) program, operated by JST, two departments of Dhaka University have been selected for the 2025 fiscal year.

JST invited global researchers to submit project proposals in three key areas: environment and energy, biological resources, and disaster prevention and mitigation. The deadline for submission was October 21, 2024. A total of 80 project proposals were submitted from different countries. A screening committee comprised of experts reviewed the proposals and selected 10 new projects, among which two are from Bangladesh—both to be led by Dhaka University.

The selected projects are: disaster Prevention and Mitigation Project and evironment and Energy Project. 

Both projects will officially begin in April 2026 and run until March 2031. However, the period from May 2025 to March 2026 will serve as a probationary phase.

Recently, the project researchers met with Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan. During the meeting, he stated, “Japan is our tested friend. This friendship transcends politics. These projects will have a direct impact on the socio-economic development of the country and will benefit the people. We aim to make such projects long-term and sustainable, and Dhaka University is fully ready to provide all kinds of support.”
