
JICA keen to invest in enhancing quality of engineering, tech education : UGC Chairman

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has expressed interest in supporting the enhancement of the quality of engineering and technology education in the country.
The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has expressed interest in supporting the enhancement of the quality of engineering and technology education in the country.
A project in this regard will be undertaken soon. Under the project, high-quality postgraduate students will be produced, and efforts will be made to make students research-oriented while enhancing their innovation and professional skills.
JICA expressed this interest during a bilateral meeting on higher education with Professor Dr. S M A Faiz, Chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC) of Bangladesh. The meeting was held at UGC on Thursday.
The meeting was attended by UGC members Prof Dr. Mohammad Tanjimuddin Khan, Prof Dr. Mohammad Anwar Hossain, Prof Dr. Md. Saidur Rahman, UGC Secretary Dr. Md. Fakhrul Islam, Director of Planning and Development Division Mohammad Maksudur Rahman Bhuiyan, Additional Director Shah Mohammad Aminul Islam, and other relevant officials.
Sarei Moto, Chief Advisor of JICA’s Technical Education Advisor Team, led a four-member delegation.
Sarei Moto of JICA stated that there is a shortage of skilled teachers in postgraduate education at engineering and technology universities in Bangladesh. Additionally, there is a lack of modern facilities for advanced research. A project will be promptly undertaken to enhance students’ capabilities, and its objectives will be defined. Necessary support will be provided for research collaboration between Bangladeshi and Japanese universities, as well as for offering joint degrees.
UGC Chairman Prof Faiz thanked JICA for this proposal to support higher education in the country. He said that there are limited opportunities to provide special incentives for postgraduate-level engineering and technology education in the country. As a result, students lack motivation to pursue postgraduate studies. He believes that this project will encourage students to pursue postgraduate education.
Professor Faiz further noted that Japanese universities have a global reputation. He highlighted that Bangladeshi youths who have pursued higher education in Japan.
