At a ceremony held on Monday at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium in the capital, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman presented the award to Lutfur Rahman. Organized by the Ministry of Education, the event awarded each recipient Tk 200,000, a crest, and a certificate of honor.
According to the Ministry of Education, Lutfur Rahman has been teaching disadvantaged children since 1974. He made it his lifelong mission to bring the light of education to children who were unable to access formal schooling due to financial hardship.
Through his self-initiated educational program, he gradually became known throughout Gaibandha as the “One-Taka Teacher.” His initiative is not merely about providing low-cost education; it stands as a remarkable example of ensuring the educational rights of underprivileged children.
Although he has never served as a teacher in a formal educational institution, Lutfur Rahman has remained actively involved in teaching for decades. Several generations of students have benefited from his guidance. Through years of selfless dedication, he has established a unique model of community-based educational service.
In recognition of his extraordinary commitment, he was awarded state recognition in the Special Category at this year’s World Teachers’ Day celebration.
The 2026 awards included educators from primary, secondary, college, madrasa, technical, university, medical, agricultural, and engineering education, as well as individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the field of education.
Alongside Lutfur Rahman, Romoni Kanta Bepari of Romoni Kanta Pathshala and Md. Mozammel Hossain Khan, Assistant Teacher at Proyash Institute of Special Education, were also honored in the Special Category for their notable contributions.
The recognition bestowed upon Lutfur Rahman is more than an award for an individual teacher. It is a powerful tribute by the state to selfless educational service and a shining example of dedication to ensuring education for all.
