
Irregularities in school boundary wall construction, locals stop work in Chilmari

Widespread irregularities have been alleged in the construction of a boundary wall for a primary school in Chilmari, Kurigram.
The contractor firm has allegedly used substandard bricks and gravel, and deviated from the approved design in the construction work of the boundary wall at Balabari Govt. Primary School No. 2 in the upazila. Local residents intervened and halted the ongoing work in protest.
According to the relevant department, under the Primary Education Development Program (PEDP-4), the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) initiated the construction of a boundary wall around Balabari Govt. Primary School No. 2 for the fiscal year 2024–2025. Following the tender process, the construction contract was awarded to a firm named Messrs. Khairul Enterprise for a total of BDT 1,424,253.54.
The purpose of constructing the boundary wall was to ensure the safety of schoolchildren and prevent accidents. As part of the government’s broader plan to improve primary education infrastructure, LGED undertook the task in Chilmari. However, serious allegations have been raised regarding the quality of work, prompting locals to halt the construction at one point.
Chilmari Upazila LGED Engineer Md. Zulfikar Ali stated, “I have instructed the site supervisor to demolish the faulty wall.” He also mentioned that he would personally inspect the site.
