Munshiganj (South) Correspondent

A second anti-narcotics operation was carried out by joint forces in the Bede community area of Goalimandra in Haldia Union of Louhajang Upazila, Munshiganj at 5:00 AM on Friday.

Louhajang Police Station, District Detective Branch (DB) Police, and the Bangladesh Army took part in the operation.

In a press release the district police confirmed the information later in the day. During the raid, a notorious drug trafficking ring was busted, and a significant amount of Phensedyl, marijuana, yaba tablets, and large sums of cash were recovered. A total of 14 individuals were arrested. Among them, 5 were charged in two separate regular drug cases. In addition, 8 individuals were sentenced to varying terms of imprisonment and fines through a mobile court. Another arrestee was shown arrested in a previously filed case.

Louhajang Assistant Commissioner (Land) and Executive Magistrate Abdullah Al Imran conducted the mobile court. The sentences handed down were as follows: Rupa: 1 month imprisonment and Tk 200 fine, Md. Purna: 2 months imprisonment and Tk 200 fine, Md. Rakhel: 2 months imprisonment and Tk 300 fine, Md. Ismail: 10 days imprisonment and Tk 200 fine, Kajal Das: 2 months imprisonment and Tk 300 fine, Md. Joynal Sheikh: 1 month imprisonment and Tk 100 fine, Md. Arif: 2 months imprisonment and Tk 300 fine, Laden: 15 days imprisonment and Tk 100 fine

Additionally, Nadira Begum, Mst. Haruna Begum, and Md. Sinarul Islam have been charged under sections 14(a) and 19(a) of the Narcotics Control Act 2018, Schedule 36(1), in a regular case (Case No. 01, Date: 03/07/2025). Recovered from them were 2 bottles of Phensedyl, 500 grams of marijuana, and Tk 40,980 in cash.

Asmaul alias Ismail and Israfi were made accused in another regular case (Louhajang PS Case No. 02, Date: 04/07/2025, Section: 36(1), Schedule 10(a)). Seized from them were 58 yaba pills and Tk 53,700 in cash.

In addition, Md. Enarul Sardar alias Ena (30) was shown arrested in a previously filed case (Case No. 06(03)25) under Sections 143/341/186/332/333/307/353/34 of the Penal Code.

Note: Goalimandra has long been known as one of the major drug hubs in Munshiganj District. While this joint operation by law enforcement agencies has brought some relief and hope among the locals, the light sentencing by the mobile court has led to public dissatisfaction. Many had expected heavier punishment, believing it would keep the offenders behind bars for longer, thereby reducing drug trade in the area. However, the short-term sentences have left many residents disappointed.
