Shuvo Das (23) of Kalaroa Upazila in Satkhira had migrated abroad in the hope of changing his fate. His dream was to alleviate the hardships of his family and bring smiles to his parents' faces. But that dream did not come true. His body has returned home in a coffin, almost 3 months and 25 days after he was killed in an Israeli drone strike in southern Lebanon.
Shuvo Das is the son of Suranjan Das of Sripatipur village in Koyla union of Kalaroa upazila. The news of his body reaching home has cast a shadow of grief over the entire Sripatipur village. The parents, who were waiting to see their beloved child back alive, finally had to accept the still body of their child.
According to family and local sources, an Israeli drone strike hit a bread truck in the Zebdin area of Nabatieh district in southern Lebanon on May 12. Three Bangladeshi workers, Shafiqul Islam of Satkhira Sadar Upazila, Nahidul Islam Nahid of Ashashuni Upazila, and Shuvo Das of Kalaroa, were killed on the spot. They lived and worked in the same area.
Shuvo migrated to Lebanon about three years ago in the hope of changing his family's fortunes. His father, Suranjan Das, who ran a van and ran a rice field, and his mother, Shikha Das, who worked in a rice field, borrowed money to send their son abroad. They hoped that his son would go abroad to alleviate the family's poverty and change the world.
Shuvo was the eldest of four siblings. He went abroad with the hopes of ending his family's dreams and his parents' suffering. But in a cruel twist of fate, that dream was never fulfilled. Young Shuvo, who went abroad with the dream of building a life, eventually had to return in a coffin.
Although the bodies of Shafiqul Islam and Nahidul Islam Nahid were returned to the country a few months ago, there was uncertainty about the repatriation of Shuvo Das' body. After a long wait and anxiety, his body has finally returned to the country.
Shuvo's death has cast a shadow of grief not only on his family but also on the surrounding areas including Sripatipur. The atmosphere has become heavy with the tears of relatives. His parents are distraught over the loss of their young son, who dreamed of becoming the only breadwinner in the family.
The son whose parents sent him abroad on loan has returned in a coffin today. Shuvo Das' family, who went abroad in the hope of a change in fortune, is now facing a new chapter of uncertainty.
