National Fisheries Week 2025 to begin on August 18

With the theme: “Let’s establish sanctuaries, fill the country with native fish” and to  conserve, develop, and ensure the sustainable use of the country’s fish resources, and to create public awareness, National Fisheries Week 2025 will be celebrated across the country from August 18 to 24. 

The inaugural ceremony of National Fisheries Week will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday  at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Center in the capital.

 The Chief Adviser of the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, Dr. Muhammad Yunus, will attend the event as the chief guest. The ceremony will be presided over by Farida Akhter, Adviser to the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock.

In recognition of special contributions to the fisheries sector, 16 individuals and organizations will be awarded the National Fisheries Medal 2025. The first, second, and third prizes will be awarded in gold, silver, and bronze medals respectively.

The week-long central programs include: August 19: Road rally on Manik Mia Avenue, technology exhibition, and discussion sessions in educational institutions, August 20: Seminar on fish sanctuaries at the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council,  August 21: Discussion session and documentary screening at Karwan Bazar,  August 22: Discussion on export potential in Chattogram,  August 23: Exchange of views with fishers and entrepreneurs at the Department of Fisheries and August 24: Evaluation, closing, and cultural program at Krishibid Institution Bangladesh (KIB).

At the district and upazila levels, activities will include rallies, release of fish fry, awarding successful entrepreneurs, documentary screenings, safe fish farming campaigns, youth workshops, quiz and painting competitions, and sports and cultural events.

Earlier, all programs, including the inauguration of National Fisheries Week, were postponed due to the tragic plane crash on July 22 at the premises of Milestone School and College in Diabari, Uttara, in the capital. 

The Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock has expressed deep sorrow and respect for the victims of the incident.
