No alternative to excavate canals to keep agriculture alive : Shama Obaid

State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaid Islam, MP, said, "To keep agriculture alive, there is no alternative to digging canals. Agricultural production must be increased by re-dug canals and rivers and by conserving water. If farmers survive, the country will survive, as agriculture is the mainstay of the country's economy."
She made these remarks while speaking as the chief guest at the 'Partner Congress-2026' event organized by the Department of Agricultural Extension at the Nagarkanda Upazila Parishad auditorium in Faridpur on Friday (June 26) at 4 pm.
At the event, cheques of Tk 5,000 each were distributed among 80 needy and helpless people of the upazila. In addition, the chief guest inaugurated a tree plantation program by distributing saplings among students of various educational institutions and an agricultural incentive distribution program among 2,200 farmers of the upazila.
Shama Obaid Islam said that the government is implementing various programs to modernize agriculture, develop climate-tolerant agricultural systems and improve the living standards of farmers. All necessary support will continue to be provided to farmers to increase agricultural production and ensure food security.
The program was presided over by Nagarkanda UNO Rezwana Afrin. Upazila Agriculture Officer Rizaul Karim moderated the program.
Deputy Director of the Department of Agricultural Extension Md. Shahaduzzaman and Additional Director of the CDA Md. Hafiz Hasan spoke as special guests.
Assistant Commissioner (Land) Afroza Haque Tania, Nagarkanda Police Station OC Rasul Samdani Azad, former General Secretary of Upazila BNP Saifur Rahman Mukul, Nagarkanda Press Club President Shawkat Ali Sharif, officials of various government departments, public representatives, officials and employees of the Agriculture Department, farmers, journalists and well-wishers were present at the time.
