Pioneer in establishing  dignity of Bengali language in London MA Rahim deserves Ekushey Padak

Staff Correspondent

Arriving in London for the first time in 1990 and taking up residence on Brady Street in East London, the unfamiliar environment felt daunting.

However, encountering Bengali lettering along Brick Lane brought a profound sense of connection, serving as a poignant reminder of home and highlighting the crucial importance of preserving one's mother tongue abroad.

The visible presence of the Bengali language on Brick Lane is far more than a set of street signboards; it stands as a testament to collective community labor, political initiative, and advocacy for cultural identity. Central to this historical effort was M A Rahim, an active figure in British local politics who worked extensively to establish the rights and representation of the Bangladeshi diaspora in East London.

During the early 1990s, when the Liberal Democratic Party held power in the Tower Hamlets Council, Rahim was actively involved in party politics and played a key role in making the Bengali language and cultural presence visible in Bangladeshi-majority areas. These early initiatives helped diaspora generations remain linked to their linguistic heritage and cultural roots.

Rahim later transitioned into Bangladeshi politics, dedicating significant time, resources, and effort to the Bangladesh Awami League with aspirations of serving as a Member of Parliament from Moulvibazar. Following the political shifts on August 5, he returned to London.

Language rights and cultural advocacy abroad remain an integral part of national heritage. Given his pioneering efforts in promoting the Bengali language and securing cultural recognition for the Bangladeshi community in the United Kingdom, stakeholders and community observers advocate that M A Rahim's contributions should  be formally evaluated and considered for the Ekushey Padak.

The Bengali signage along Brick Lane continues to symbolize the diaspora's struggle, identity, and rights—a legacy of dedication to language and community that merits preservation for future generations.
