113 shops evicted in Wabdarharhat Bazar in Gopalganj

Gopalganj Correspondent

A total of 113 shops have been demolished in an eviction drive conducted by the Water Development Board at Wabdarhat Bazar in Amtali Union of Kotalipara Upazila in Gopalganj from morning till evening on Thursday.

The operation was led by Ronti Poddar, Assistant Commissioner and Executive Magistrate from the Gopalganj Deputy Commissioner’s office. Officials from the local police administration, fire service, and the rural electricity department also participated in the drive.

According to the Water Development Board, 113 illegally constructed permanent and semi-permanent shops were evicted from the 11.5 acres of acquired land in plot number 65 of Gachapara Mouza in Amtali Union. Four bulldozers were used to demolish the structures.

Affected shop owners, demanding rehabilitation, said, “We have suffered irreparable losses in this eviction drive. We urge the government to arrange for our rehabilitation.”

Locals said the Wabdarhat Bazar, established in 1986, was the only source for daily necessities for residents of nearly 10 surrounding villages. The market’s eviction has caused severe hardship for the community.

The Water Development Board authorities stated that regular drives will continue to prevent illegal occupation of government land.
