300 eminent DU researchers honoured for academic excellence

In recognition of their contributions to research and intellectual advancement, nearly 300 distinguished faculty members and researchers from various departments and institutes of the University of Dhaka were honored at the DU Research Excellence Recognition 2025 ceremony held on Friday at the Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban.

The event was presided over by DU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan, with Planning Ministry Advisor Prof. Dr. Wahiduddin Mahmud attending as the chief guest. Other notable speakers included Pro-Vice Chancellors Prof. Dr. Saima Haque Bidisha (Administration) and Prof. Dr. Mamun Ahmed (Academic), Emeritus Professor Dr. A. F. Sirajul Islam Chowdhury, Daily New Age Editor Nurul Kabir, and Selim Rahman, Chairman of KDS Group.The welcome address was delivered by Prof. Dr. M. Rezaul Islam, Director of the Institutional Quality Assurance Cell, while Acting Registrar Munshi Shams Uddin Ahmed offered the vote of thanks.Prof. Wahiduddin Mahmud suggested that transforming the University Grants Commission (UGC) into a Higher Education Commission is under consideration to boost research capacity. He congratulated DU researchers for their internationally acclaimed research and emphasized creating context-specific research models.VC Prof. Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan called for a research-centric culture and academic unity beyond political bias, noting efforts to improve DU's international ranking and increase collaboration with global universities. He mentioned a doubling of Chinese students over the past year and active participation by visiting professors.Prof. Dr. Saima Haque Bidisha stressed enhanced collaboration among individuals, institutions, government, and alumni to foster impactful research.Prof. Dr. Mamun Ahmed explained that this initiative was the first institutional recognition for researchers who published in high-impact journals in 2024, with the aim of encouraging young academics.

Prof. Dr. A. F. Sirajul Islam Chowdhury urged for research that contributes to human welfare and transformation, underscoring the importance of conducting and publishing research in the mother tongue.

Editor Nurul Kabir proposed the formation of a National Translation Commission to translate global scholarly works into Bangla, making them accessible to a broader audience, especially students.
