 Munshiganj (South) Correspondent

Five people, including three members of the same family and an ambulance driver, were killed in a road accident on the Dhaka-Mawa Expressway at Nimtala in Sirajdikhan upazila of Munshiganj.

A passenger bus rammed into a stationary ambulance from behind, leading to the fatal incident. One woman died at the scene, and four others succumbed to their injuries after being taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in critical condition.

The accident occurred at around 12:30 PM on Thursday in front of the Talukdar Pump at Nimtala along the Dhaka-Mawa Expressway. This was confirmed by OC Abdul Quader Jelani of Hasara Highway Police Station.

At Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), police camp in-charge Md. Faruk confirmed the deaths of the four victims. Among the deceased was a woman named Afsana (20), her father Samad Fakir (60), and her brother Hafiz Billal (40), all from South Tutkhali village in Madaripur Sadar upazila. The ambulance driver, Mahbub Sardar (28), also died in the incident.

Police have taken the bus into custody.

According to police and eyewitnesses, the ambulance was heading toward Dhaka when one of its tires got punctured. It had stopped near the Talukdar Pump at Nimtala to fix the issue. At that moment, a passenger bus from Golden Paribahan, also heading toward Dhaka, crashed into the back of the stationary ambulance and ran over people standing behind it. A 35-year-old woman inside the ambulance died on the spot. Two women and three men were also injured.

Upon receiving the news, a rescue team from the Srinagar Fire Service arrived at the scene and transported the injured to medical facilities. The critically injured were referred to Dhaka for advanced treatment. Four others were treated at a local health complex. Later, Samad Fakir, Hafiz Billal, Afsana, and Mahbub Sardar died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Dewan Azad, Station Officer at Srinagar Fire Service, said that one body remains in the custody of highway police at the scene.

OC Abdul Quader Jelani of Hasara Highway Police Station stated that the woman’s body has been recovered and kept at the police station. Five injured individuals were sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. The ambulance did not sustain significant damage, and it is believed that the passengers were standing behind it when the bus crashed. The bus has been seized.

Md. Faruk, In-charge of the DMCH police camp, said that the bodies have been kept in the hospital morgue for autopsy. After the autopsies are completed, the bodies will be handed over to the families.
