8 paddy harvesters hospitalized after consuming rice, water in Singra

Eight paddy harvesters fell ill after consuming rice and water while harvesting paddy in Singra, Natore. They have been rescued and admitted to the Upazila Health Complex. Initially, it is suspected that they may have contracted food poisoning.
The incident took place at around 2:30 pm on Tuesday in Garabari village of Dahiya Union of the upazila.
Locals said that the workers engaged in paddy harvesting in the Chalanbil area drank rice and water provided by the landowner during their lunch break. Shortly after, 8 workers fell ill one by one. When they showed symptoms of vomiting, dizziness and physical weakness, the locals quickly rescued them and brought them to the Upazila Health Complex.
The sick workers are Md. Anwar (30), Md. Azad (40), Md. Ramizul (38), Md. Yasin (25), Md. Yusuf (26), Md. Hashem (40), Md. Monir (25) and Abu Bakkar Siddique (26). All of them live in Garabari village.
Worker Abu Bakkar Siddique said, "When we were thirsty during the rice harvest, the landowner gave us rice and water to drink from his house. Shortly after eating, we fell ill. Later, we were taken to the hospital."
The sick workers are currently undergoing treatment at the Singra Upazila Health Complex.
No statement was received from the landowner Abbas Ali regarding this matter. He did not receive calls on his mobile phone even after several attempts.
Singra Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Dr. Mujahidul Islam said, initially it seems to be a case of food poisoning. The patients are being given necessary treatment, and all are now out of danger.
Singra Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Rafiqul Islam said, "I have heard about the incident and we are investigating how the toxic substance got mixed in the food."
