Chittagong Correspondent
The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has solved an eight-year-old murder case in Chattogram, arresting three persons, including the victim’s wife and brother, for their alleged involvement.
The arrested are Nasima Akhter (42), wife of the victim Nazim Uddin (54); Nazim's brother Jashim Uddin (52); and CNG driver Abul Kalam (47).
Officials of CID based in Chattogram arrested them in separate drives across Chattogram on May 4, using technological surveillance, said Special Super of CID media wing Jashim Uddin Khan.
He said that the victim Nazim Uddin, a migrant worker, reportedly returned to the country in late 2016 without informing his family, following news of his son missing. Frequent arguments erupted between the couple over the matter, which escalated in a day of May 2017 during a dispute over household finances.
During the altercation, Nasima allegedly pushed her husband, causing him to fall and hit his head on a doorframe.
He died at the scene, and Nasima, confirming the death, concealed the body inside the house for about a week. She later disposed of the body with the help of her husband's brother Jashim and driver Kalam, wrapping it in a sack and dumping it in a pond about 100 yards from their residence in the Dakhshin Sorta area under Rauzan Police Station in Chattogram.
Local residents discovered the decomposing body on July 18, 2017, initially mistaking it for animal remains. Upon further inspection, human bones were found, prompting police intervention.
The body, unclaimed at the time, was buried by Anjuman Mufidul Islam, Chattogram, after postmortem examination.
Police filed a murder case with Rauzan Police Station on July 19, 2017. The same day, Jashim Uddin filed a missing person report for his brother. DNA tests conducted on Nazim Uddin’s wife, brother, and daughter later confirmed the identity of the body.
Recently, during fresh investigations, Nasima Akhter voluntarily confessed to the crime under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure in a Chattogram court.
However, the fate of Nazim Uddin’s missing son remains unknown, and no legal steps have been taken by the family regarding his disappearance.
