Baby dies after birthday balloon gets stuck in throat in Gafargaon

A 7-month-old baby named Rafsa died after a birthday balloon got stuck in her throat in Gafargaon, Mymensingh at 8:30 pm on Monday in Charipara village of Barbaria union of the upazila. Rafsa is the daughter of Md. Roni Mia of the area.
Local Union Parishad (UP) member Mahabul Alam confirmed the matter and said that the fourth birthday of baby girl Rafsa's elder brother Ihan was on Monday. On this occasion, the family members made preparations to celebrate Ihan's birthday. Accordingly, everyone including Ihan's father were busy decorating the house by inflating balloons. Meanwhile, baby Rafsa was sitting on the bed and playing, and unbeknownst to everyone, Rafsa put a balloon in her mouth, which accidentally got stuck in her throat. At that time, the family members immediately realized and rushed her to the Upazila Health Complex, where the baby died on the way.
Gafargaon Police Station OC (Investigation) Abdur Rahim Sarkar said, "The police were sent after hearing about the incident. In fact, it was a mere accident. No one came to the police station to file a complaint in this regard. However, family members, especially parents, need to keep an eye on young children."
