BCL activist arrested in Kotalipara

Police arrested Jannatul Ferdous Taukir (26), an active activist of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) and son of a prominent Awami League leader in Kotalipara.

He was picked up on Thursday at  2:30 pm from in front of his residence in the Baliavanga area under Kotalipara municipality. Taukir is the son of H. M. Ohidul Islam, joint general secretary of Kotalipara Upazila Awami League and former mayor of Kotalipara municipality.

Following his arrest, police showed him arrested under a case filed with the Special Powers Act and later sent him to jail.

According to police, on July 16, Awami League leaders and activists of its affiliated bodies gathered at Wabdar Hat in Kotalipara upazila and blocked the road by felling trees. The demonstration sparked public panic and disrupted movement. Later, police filed a case under the Special Powers Act, naming 155 people and accusing around 1,500 others anonymously.

Kotalipara Police Station OC  Khondokar Hafizur Rahman said, “Video footage of the July 16 incident confirmed Taukir’s involvement in the road blockade. He was arrested as one of the unnamed accused in the case and sent to jail on Thursday afternoon. So far, 67 accused have been arrested and sent to jail in connection with the case. Drives are underway to arrest the remaining accused.”
