Due to heavy rainfall in Jibannagar, Chuadanga, the only bridge to enter Santospur village has collapsed due to strong current. The bridge collapsed sometime on Tuesday night.
Thousands of people from Santospur, Manikpur, Rajapur, Ratirampur, Sinnagar, Dhopakhali and Madhabkhali villages have suffered greatly due to this.
Farmers have been completely stopped from bringing their agricultural products and traders from their homes. Busy people are walking on the broken bridge at great risk.
On reaching the spot, it was found that a part of the bridge has collapsed. In addition, cracks have been seen all around the bridge. There is a possibility that the entire bridge will collapse and sink under the water at some point.
Meanwhile, Jibannagar Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Md. Al-Amin visited the scene after receiving the news of the bridge collapse.
At that time, he said, the bridge in Santospur village collapsed due to the strong flow of water from the Bhairab River. The bridge is very important for the people of this area. We have talked to the concerned authorities to rebuild it. They will make an arrangement for it soon. And now we will take action on what alternative arrangements can be made so that people can travel.
Jibannagar Engineering Officer Ashraful Islam said, the collapsed bridge was built immediately after the Independence War. Initially, the condition of the bridge was not repairable. A new bridge will have to be built. We will send a proposal for a new bridge from our department. But it will take time.
Meanwhile, people and pedestrians from 7 villages have strongly demanded that the authorities rebuild the bridge.
