The Bangladesh Coast Guard continues its efforts to combat extortion and ensure the safety of vessels operating on the country’s inland waterways.

Coast Guard Media Officer Lieutenant Commander Siam-ul-Haque shared this  information in a press release on Thursday morning.

According to the press release, on Wednesday at 8:00 PM, the Chattogram-bound lighter vessel MV Sabinatul Madina-2, anchored near the Chandpur confluence area, was approached by a gang of seven extortionists who boarded the vessel and demanded money. The vessel’s master immediately contacted the Coast Guard emergency hotline 16111, seeking assistance.

Upon receiving the information, a rapid response team from Coast Guard Station Chandpur reached the vessel via high-speed boat. However, sensing the presence of the Coast Guard, the extortionists fled the scene, and no arrests could be made.

The Coast Guard team later spoke with the crew to boost their morale and continued patrolling the route to ensure the safety of vessels navigating the area.

The Bangladesh Coast Guard will continue such operations in the future to maintain law and order across the country.
