DU administration condemned assault of two students during protest against harassment at Chandni Chowk Market

DU Correspondent

Two students of Dhaka University were assaulted while protesting the harassment and indecent remarks made by a shopkeeper at Chandni Chowk Market towards a female student of the university.

The university administration strongly condemned and protested the incident. It urged law enforcement agencies to ensure swift justice against those involved. The administration also warned that any future physical assault on university students would be met with strict action.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan visited the injured students at the Shaheed Buddhijibi Dr. Mohammad Mortaza Medical Centre on Tuesday.

It is mentioned that on Monday night, 26 May, around 8:30 PM, DU students Shahedul Islam, Ayazur Rahman, and a female student went to Chandni Chowk Market to buy clothes. When they decided not to purchase after bargaining, the concerned shopkeeper made offensive remarks towards the female student. Shahedul Islam and Ayazur Rahman immediately protested.

Following this, the store manager and several other shopkeepers from nearby shops attacked the two male students. Later, when more DU students arrived at the scene, the shopkeepers formed a mob and assaulted them as well. Shahedul Islam was detained in a room for 40 minutes, during which he was subjected to physical and psychological torture, including threats to his life.

The injured students received treatment at the Shaheed Buddhijibi Dr. Mohammad Mortaza Medical Centre and Dhaka Medical College Hospital. After the incident became public, DU students gathered in protest in front of the New Market Police Station, demanding justice.

During the protest, Associate Professor Saifuddin Ahmed (Proctor), Professor Dr. Md. Faruk Shah (Provost of Shahid Sergeant Zahurul Haque Hall), assistant proctors, and members of the proctorial team were present.

A case was filed naming five individuals and accusing around 50 other traders. Police have arrested three of the accused, and New Market police have assured that the remaining offenders will soon be brought to justice.
