
DU student Shahriar Alam Samya’s murder to be tried in Special Tribunal

The murder of Shahriar Alam Samya, a brilliant student of Dhaka University, will be tried in a special tribunal, and the perpetrators will be brought to justice swiftly, authorities said in a high-level meeting today.
During a special meeting held on Saturday at the office of the Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University, senior officials of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) and the University administration shared that the mystery behind Samya’s killing will be fully revealed within a week.
Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Admin) Prof Dr. Saima Haque Bidisha, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Education) Prof Dr. Mamun Ahmed, DMP Commissioner Sheikh Mohammad Sajjat Ali (NDC), Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Head of the Investigation Committee Professor Dr. Siddiqur Rahman Khan, and others.
Key decisions in the meeting included remand of the arrested suspects will begin from 18 May, the case will be tried in a special tribunal to ensure swift justice, permanent closure of the gate of Suhrawardy Udyan (Park) adjacent to TSC, installation of more CCTV cameras, lighting, and a dedicated police box at Suhrawardy Udyan and increasing of campus security and regular search operations in the vicinity.
Following the incident, three suspects were arrested from hospitals and through mobile tracking.
DMP has analyzed CCTV footage from the TSC and Doel Chattar areas.
Further evidence is being reviewed; sensitive details are being kept confidential due to the ongoing investigation.
DMP Commissioner Sajjat Ali said ,“We are moving fast. The remand of suspects will help uncover the full incident. The case will be handled in a special tribunal to ensure the fastest possible justice.”
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan said , “We stand with our students. University and law enforcement are working together closely to bring the perpetrators to justice and ensure a safe campus environment.”
On the night of 13 May, Shahriar Alam Samya, a student at the Institute of Education and Research, was fatally stabbed by assailants near Suhrawardy Udyan, across from the Bangla Academy. He later died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
