Embankment breach along Bishkhali River in Betagi leaves 50 families waterlogged
Betagi (Barguna) Correspondent
A severe breach in the flood protection embankment along the Bishkhali River at the Jhopkhali area in Betagi Upazila of Barguna has plunged over fifty local families into intense suffering.
Widespread riverbank erosion has left the coastal community completely vulnerable to daily tidal actions and monsoonal weather patterns.
According to local residents, the situation deteriorates significantly during heavy rainfall and seasonal high tides. Even a minor rise in the Bishkhali River's water level forces tidal surges through the broken embankment, directly flooding coastal homesteads and courtyards.
The persistent inundation routinely traps residents indoors, making daily movement nearly impossible. Children, the elderly, and sick individuals are facing the worst of the crisis, dealing with disrupted water supply, compromised sanitation, and the risk of waterborne diseases.
Affected villagers alleged that despite repeated warnings about the weakening structural state of the dyke, no timely reinforcement measures were executed.
The local community has urgently called for immediate intervention from the Water Development Board, local administration, and public representatives to implement emergency repairs on the breached section and construct a permanent riverbank defense wall to save their homes and livelihoods from being permanently swallowed by the river.
