Manjur Morshed Tuhin, Patuakhali

The traditional wooden boat market of Kalapara upazila of Patuakhali seems to come back to life with the onset of the Ashadh-Shravan rains.

This centennial market is held every Tuesday in the area adjacent to the launch ghat of Kalapara Bazar in the upazila. Since early morning, craftsmen from far and wide have arrived with wooden boats of various sizes. As the morning progresses, the entire area becomes bustling with the hustle and bustle of buyers and sellers, bargaining and the busyness of boat selection. During the monsoon season, this market becomes a lively gathering place for the lives and livelihoods of the coastal people.

According to locals, this boat market, which has been around for many generations, is not just a commercial market; it is closely linked to the tradition, culture and livelihood of the coastal town.

The market sells wooden boats of various sizes, from small dinghies to fishing boats, rice transport and canals. Depending on the size, quality of wood and construction style, the price of the boat starts from 300 taka to 10,000 taka. Large boats made of high-quality wood cost 20,000 taka or more.

Local craftsmen say that it takes a few days to a few weeks to make a boat. If properly stored at the end of the season, a boat can easily be used for three to five years.

The demand for these boats is highest during the monsoon season. Farmers in coastal areas use these boats to bring rice from waterlogged lands, fishermen use them to fish in rivers, canals and canals, and rural people use them for daily transportation and goods transportation. Many businessmen buy multiple boats at once and sell them at various markets in neighboring upazilas and districts to make a profit.

Boat builder Hossain Sikder said, "Our family has been making boats for several generations. Sales increase with the arrival of the monsoon. This market is our biggest source of income for the year."

Md. Shafiqur Rahman, a resident and buyer of Chakamiya Union, said, "The locally made boats are strong and durable. The price is also relatively low. That's why I buy boats from here every monsoon."

According to locals, this market creates employment for not only artisans but also many people, including wood traders, transport workers, and small traders. As a result, a lively festive atmosphere is created every Tuesday at Kalapara Market.

This wooden boat market every Tuesday is not just a market; it is a unique reflection of the struggle, tradition, employment, and living history of the coastal people.
