In the markets of Shyamnagar Upazila, Satkhira, seedlings of eucalyptus and akashmoni trees—both banned by the Ministry of Environment, Forests, and Climate Change—are being openly sold. Environmentally conscious citizens have reported that eucalyptus and akashmoni seedlings, prohibited by the government, are being sold publicly in Shyamnagar Municipality’s markets. On Saturday morning (July 5), a field visit revealed these seedlings displayed for sale at various market stalls in Shyamnagar Municipality. Two nursery owners or seedling sellers from Kaliganj Upazila, who wished to remain anonymous, said they had heard that selling and planting eucalyptus and akashmoni seedlings is banned. However, they were unaware of when the ban began or the full details of the notification. Another seller expressed concern that destroying the existing trees in their nurseries would cause significant financial loss. He politely explained that they had invested a lot of money to cultivate these two species, and losing them would be costly. He added that any assistance would be greatly appreciated. On May 15, the Ministry of Environment, Forests, and Climate Change issued a notification prohibiting the planting, uprooting, and selling of aggressive species eucalyptus and akashmoni seedlings in government, private, and individual tree-planting programs. Instead, it urged the planting of native fruit-bearing, forest, and medicinal tree species to promote afforestation. Environmental advocates say these two tree species harm the environment; therefore, it is crucial to raise awareness to prevent their planting and sale in markets. They also emphasize the need for the administration to take necessary measures.
