Faridpur Marine Engineering students announce indefinite strike to realise their demands

Faridpur Correspondent

To press for their legitimate demands and rights, students of the Faridpur Marine Institute have announced an indefinite strike through a human chain and sit-in program on Monday  starting at 8 a.m..

The students locked the main gate of the institute’s academic building and began their sit-in program.

During this time, Mohammad Taharatul Islam, a student of the Marine Engineering College, stated that after much sacrifice and struggle, students from six marine institutes across the country have been compelled to unitedly call for an indefinite strike on their campuses with three specific demands.

The first of their three demands is the implementation of the decision made on October 28, 2024, under the chairmanship of Advisor Dr. Asif Nazrul at the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment, which includes providing Officer CDC (Certificate of Competency) to marine and shipbuilding students through a six-month pre-sea training program.

The second demand is the introduction of recruitment rules for marine and shipbuilding diploma holders for the post of Sub-Assistant Engineer in engine machine-related departments under various ministries.

The third demand is to improve the quality of training.

The students stated that until their demands are met, the six marine institutes, which they describe as “factories producing unemployed graduates,” will continue the indefinite strike unitedly.
