
Joint drive of Coast Guard - Fisheries Depat seizes 70,450- kg of Jatka in Patuakhali

A joint operation by the Bangladesh Coast Guard and the Fisheries Department in Patuakhali seized of about 70,450- kg of illegal jatka (juvenile hilsa fish), valued at around 250 million Taka on Saturday,
Lieutenant Commander Harun-or-Rashid, Coast Guard Media Officer, confirmed the details through a press release on Saturday afternoon.
According to the press release, based on confidential information, a special operation was conducted at 2 a.m. on Saturday by the Patuakhali Coast Guard Station and the Fisheries Department near the Patuakhali Bridge Toll Plaza. During the operation, three suspicious buses—Dolphin, Seven Deluxe, and Mizan Paribahan—traveling from Kuakata to Dhaka were searched, leading to the seizure of 40,450 kg of illegal jatka worth approximately 140.57 million Taka. As the actual owners of the illegal jatka could not be identified, no arrests were made. The bus drivers were released after providing written undertakings.
On the same day, at 6 a.m., an additional 30,000 kg of illegal jatka, valued at approximately 105 million Taka, was seized in an abandoned state from the Hetalia Bandhghat area in Patuakhali.
The seized jatka was later distributed among local orphanages, poor, and destitute families in the presence of fisheries officials.
To maintain law and order in the country, the Bangladesh Coast Guard has continued 24-hour patrols. Such operations will remain ongoing in the future to curb illegal activities.
